Fortunately, china, porcelain, silver, metal and other hard surface items clean up quite from soot and smoke damage. 

If the item is not scotched, which can't be removed, these items can be cleaned up and are good to go again.

These coffee, or tea, cups, (depending on your perspective) and the whole matching collection shined right up again.

In a fire damage, being able to have things cleaned up to use again is much cheaper than replacing the items.  This frees up more of the claim funds for for items which could not be saved. 

Insurance policies always have a coverage dollar amount limit.  Also, if the damage has exceeded the limit, saving items like these also helps to have more money for the things which can't be saved.
